Cupping is a method within the Traditional Chinese Medicine which is often used to relieve stiff muscles and pain since it improves the local circulation of the affected area. However, it can also be used to treat colds. Cups will be placed on the upper back in order for the body to get rid of the cold faster.
Very often, glass balls are used. But nowadays, plastic cups are used as well.
A cotton ball soaked with alcohol is ignited. Through the suction which is generated when the flame is very swiftly twirled around the inside of the ball, it can be stuck on the skin.
Massage oils can be applied and the cups can be moved on a larger area of the body a better circulation can be enhanced.
After treatment, red and round marks may appear on the skin, and these may vary from light pink to dark purple red depending on the severity of the stagnation. These marks are usually harmless and will disappear after 1 week.
